Women's Equality Day graphic

Women's Equality Day is an annual event in the United States. Since its inception in 1971, it has been observed on August 26th marking American women's advancements toward equality with men. The 19th Amendment, ratified in 1920, ensures voting rights for everyone regardless of gender. Today, Women's Equality Day celebrates the achievements of women and remind us of the unique daily struggles that women face.

Join us in honoring heroic women that have made great accomplishments overcoming hurdles of discrimination.

Antiterrorism Awareness Month graphic
August is Antiterrorism Awareness Month and now more than ever in the United States, vigilance is required to protect our country. People should always maintain good personal security habits and alert the proper authorities of suspicious behavior. An actively involved community is key to preventing a terrorist or extremist attack or an insider threat. Americans should take the time during Antiterrorism Awareness Month to review protection plans and empower their employees.

National Purple Heart Day graphic
National Purple Heart Day is celebrated on August 7th. The medal is presented to service members who have been wounded or killed because of enemy action while serving in the U.S. Military. This distinction means a service member has greatly sacrificed themselves or paid the ultimate price while in the line of duty. The Purple Heart is the oldest Military award presented to American service members.

Woman's Equality Day

By: Crancena Ross and Samuel Armstrong

Ms. Lillian Dixon
CASA crestWomen's Equality Day graphic

Crancena Ross recently interviewed CASA Lillian Dixon, who represents Washington D.C., to get her thoughts on Woman's Equality Day. CASA Dixon responded, "I am honored to celebrate Women's Equality Day. August 18, 1920 was a significant milestone in our Nation's history. We celebrate because of the ratification of the 19thAmendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote. I honestly struggle with why it took 72 years for women to gain the right to vote and nearly another five decades for women of color. This celebration reminds me that I am standing on the shoulders of the brave women who came before me."

She went on to comment, "Over time, these women have made monumental accomplishments and significant contributions to our Nation. And I know without their efforts, Vice President Kamala Harris would not be VP of the United States, Mrs. Ketanji Brown Jackson be a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, nor would Mrs. Christine Wormuth be the Secretary of the Army. Equality will be something I will always push for, if necessary, but I look forward to the day when the gender equality conversation is non-existent because women and men are treated and awarded equally for their contributions to our Nation. Hopefully, this won't take another 72 years."

Major General Sheryl Gordon

Major General Sheryl Gordon currently serves as the Adjutant General of the Alabama Army National Guard. Commissioned in 1981 through the Alabama Military Academy, she became the Alabama National Guard's first female general officer in 2009 and is the first female adjutant general in Alabama National Guard history. She was appointed the Adjutant General by Governor Kay Ivey in July 2017.

Samuel Armstrong, PaYS Marketing Analyst, recently asked Major General Gordon for her thoughts on Woman's Equality Day. She stated, "My thought on my hero, my grandmother, who was ahead of her time. She was born in 1904. She and her sisters were all college educated, which was rare for that time. She worked outside the home, yet she was home to prepare lunch, returned to finish her workday, and in the evening cooked dinner. She demonstrated to me that you could do it all." She also stated, "We, men, and women, recognize Women's Equality Day because the 1971 Joint Resolution of Congress identified the issue that women have been treated as second-class citizens. Women's Equality Day officially recognizes the 1920 authorization for women to vote and the 1970 nationwide demonstration for women's rights. Equality Day is a time to reflect on our progress as citizens. This year the National Guard received paid parental leave, which is progress for women and their families. I appreciate the women who have petitioned for equality and celebrate their success, yet there is more to be done internationally and at home."

Command Sergeant Major Angela Indardeo

Recruiting patch

Command Sergeant Major Angela Indardeo currently serves as the CSM for the New York City Army Recruiting Battalion.

CSM Indardeo was interviewed by PaYS Marketing Analyst, Crancena Ross on the meaning of Woman's Equality Day. She stated, "Celebrating and recognizing women's equality means taking the time out to reflect on how far we have come as women within society, starting with the right to vote, to currently holding a position as the Vice-President of the United States of America. What women have always brought to the table is so valuable, as women can be nurturing and empathetic leaders within our society capable of crisis and enduring changes."

She went on to say, "As evident throughout history, women can achieve whatever they put their minds and hearts towards. They are certainly equal to their male counterparts in all aspects. The recognition and designation of women's equality means that the world officially acknowledges the true value of women across all cultures around the world."
