Hispanic Heritage Month graphic

National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the United States.

Hispanic Heritage month proudly celebrates civilians, families, and Soldiers. During this time of the year, they enjoy festivals, dances, concerts, parades and honor old traditions that have been passed down for generations.

Join the PaYS Team in paying tribute to our Hispanic American friends, family members and colleagues.

Patriot Day graphic
Patriot day is held on September 11th each year in remembrance to all those who were injured or killed from the terrorist attacks at multiple locations in the United States on September 11, 2001.

The flag of the United States is flown at half-staff at the White House and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments throughout the world; Americans are also encouraged to display flags in and outside their homes. Additionally, a moment of silence is observed to correspond with the attacks, beginning at 8:46 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time), the time the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

We continue to remember this day and the sacrifices made to keep our country safe.

Hispanic Heritage Month

CASA crest
Puerto Rico Army National Guard logo
We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. The PaYS Team would like to recognize the following Civilian Aides to the Secretary of the Army (CASAs), Myrna Trevino, Edgar Fuentes, Mario Guerra, Luis Martinez-Monfort and MG Jose J. Reyes, Adjutant General of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard.

Myrna Trevino
Myrna Trevino

Myrna Trevino is currently serving as a CASA in Houston, TX. She has always worked in a Military community providing healthcare options awareness and education, along with an overall holistic wellness plan. Myrna said, "I always wanted to be a connecter and had a natural ability for it." While already performing CASA-like duties in the community, it was an innate fit, so she submitted a package to become a CASA. Trevino added, "There was also a need to bridge the gap between the community and the Army, especially in the Hispanic community. Educating our families about the Army opportunities is an important message for our future generations. Together, we can change generations and strengthen our country."

During the interview with CASA Trevino, Ms. Ross asked her to elaborate about her traditions, celebrations, or rituals her family participates in that others might see differently. She stated, "I'm First Generation Mexican American and celebrations, traditions and rituals are all a part of my heritage. They are part of my life and so many of them have become mainstream, like mariachis, tamales, pinatas, etc. However, if I could name one that is still prominent to me, it would be my father going every Sunday morning to pick up Pan Dulce from the local Mexican bakery, while I was growing up on the Northside of Houston. Empanadas are my favorite, and we still have them on special occasions."

Edgar Fuentes
Edgar Fuentes

CASA Edgar Fuentes is a retired U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major currently serving in Killeen, Texas.

PaYS Marketing Analyst Michael O'Brien recently had the opportunity to interview CASA Fuentes about Hispanic Heritage Month and what it means to him. CASA Fuentes stated, "Hispanic Heritage Month shows the world how diverse our forces are and the contributions that all races have when it comes to the reason for our success as Armed Forces. Being Hispanic is not about one month, it's about bringing respect to my last name and my culture at all times."

CASA Fuentes went on to say, "One of the most powerful quotes that I live by was one from the legend Roberto Clemente: "If you have an opportunity to make things better and you don't, then you are wasting your time on Earth." For me it is all about inspiring people to do their best no matter where they come from, with the hopes that they pay it forward and continue to inspire the next generation."

Mr. Jim Cada
Mario Guerra

CASA Mario Guerra is currently serving in Los Angeles, CA. Mr. Guerra was born in Cuba right after Fidel Castro took power. His father was a surgeon in Cuba and was very well off financially, but he decided he wanted more for his family and a communist regime would not allow him to achieve that dream. The family came to the United States on one of the first Freedom Flights (Viaje de Libertad). His father left everything behind to start new at the age of 41. CASA Guerra remembered being strip-searched as a little boy at the age of six in Havana and did not understand why the family had to leave everything behind. With less than $50 to their name, they arrived in America.

"Like many refugees after arriving in America, everyone in my family went to work." Guerra states. His dad started as a janitor at a Los Angeles hospital while he learned English and studied his medical books at night. When he finally retired, he was a surgeon at the very same hospital.

CASA Guerra commented regarding the opportunities we have here, "America is a very good country with a big heart". He also used the line that many can relate to or use today, "Cuban by birth, American by choice". CASA Guerra, from a young age, witnessed what an amazing country we have. "I am grateful for everything that America stands for." Guerra has a legacy that will continue to shine in his community for Hispanic Americans including being only the second Hispanic Mayor in the 145-year history of his town.

Luis Martinez-Monfort
Luis Martinez-Monfort

Luis Martinez-Monfort, serving as CASA out of Tampa, Fl., is the managing partner of the law firm of Martinez-Monfort, P.A. He is also a successful small business co-owner of Tampa Laundry Company, LLC, a full service residential and commercial laundry company which was named Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year in the start-up category. Mr. Martinez-Monfort is involved in various charitable and social organizations in the Tampa Bay Area. He and his wife, Amy, have two children.

PaYS Marketing Analyst Curtis Taylor asked Martinez-Monfort, what did Hispanic Heritage Month mean to him, and his responses were, "One of the unifying themes of Hispanic Heritage Month that resonates with me, is the celebration of the pride and love so many of us Hispanics have for this great Country of ours." He went on to say, "My pride and love for America is born out of my family's political refugee story. You see, both sides of my family fled communist Cuba to America shortly after 1959 with barely the clothes on their back. One of my grandfathers, who himself served in the U.S. Army in WWII, was arrested, and detained by the Fidel Regime in the famous La Cabaña fortress in Havana Harbor for part of 1959. It was only in the welcoming arms of America where political refugees such as my family could find safety, peace, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives. My family believes, like most Cuban Americans who fled communist oppression, that America is truly the shining city on the hill that embodies freedom and opportunity. Such belief bore true for Cuban Americans arriving in the 1960s and drives those today who still risk life and limb to cross treacherous seas just for the chance to be a part of the America dream. My father served in the U.S. Army with humility and pride, thankful for the opportunity to give back to the Country that gave his family so much. I, in turn, humbly try to carry forward that sense of gratitude through my service in the CASA Program. To me, Hispanic Heritage Month is about celebrating America's warmth and love for its Hispanic immigrants that, like all immigrants over its 200 plus year history are an integral part of what makes this Nation great. Dios bendiga a los Estados Unidos! (God Bless the United States)."

MG Jose J. Reyes
MG Jose J. Reyes

MG Jose J. Reyes currently serves as The Adjutant General of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard. He joined the U.S. Army in 1985 and spent nine years on Active Duty. The last 28 years he has served in the Puerto Rico Army National Guard, appointed Adjutant General by Governor Kay Ivey in July 2017. He is originally from Guaynabo, PR.

MG Reyes shared his thought on his hero, his father, who came from humble beginning in Coamo, PR. His father was one of 22 kids. He was a man of great vision, ambition, and decided to leave Puerto Rico to create a better future. There was no obstacle too great that he could not overcome. His father later moved to Spain to study medicine, but returned to Puerto Rico, making it home once again and investing his talents into developing commercial real estate properties successfully until he was 100 years old.

MG Reyes stated to PaYS Marketing Analyst, Samuel Armstrong, "Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to recognize the hard work of all Hispanics living in the United States - including Puerto Ricans - and the sacrifices they make daily to provide for their loved ones, their communities, and the Nation. It is a time to honor their extraordinary contributions to our country and to celebrate their incomparable achievements."

He went on to say "Puerto Ricans are proud of their US citizenship, but as Hispanics we are also proud of the outstanding contributions we have made to the United States' societal and cultural development. We have given the country distinguished individuals in government, science, sports, and the arts. Athletes like Roberto Clemente; actors in the league of Rita Moreno, Raúl Julia and Benicio del Toro; pioneers like U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and the first female Surgeon General of the U.S., Dr. Antonia Coello. And, why not, we are also famous for our tostones and Piña Coladas."

"We are a rich culture, filled with flavors, aromas, and rhythm. We are proud to be Hispanics."

Antonio would go on to give an overview of PaYS to over 400 in-person attendees and thousands of participants watching online. After the speaking engagement, Antonio continued to network and discuss collaborative opportunities with several representatives of employers and Veteran support organizations. Oswego Health was founded more than 130 years ago when a group of community-minded residents gathered for the specific purpose of starting a hospital. A look back to the initial board minutes reveals that the founders had concerns, not unlike those in healthcare today. They wanted to provide care to all residents, regardless of income and other factors. They desired a location that people could easily access and, of course, wanted their facility to have the best physicians and most modern technology. Since that initial hospital meeting held in 1881, Oswego Hospital has evolved into a healthcare system that includes many vital services and programs.

Congratulations to Oswego Health. We look forward to a great partnership.
