Italian American, Polish American and German American Heritage Month

Story by PaYS Staff

The Army PaYS Team would like to salute all stakeholders and partners of Italian American, Polish American and German American Heritage. Our Army is made stronger because of the diversity that makes up its ranks.

American and Italian flags

Italian American Heritage Month is celebrated every year to honor and recognize the centuries of achievements, successes, and valuable contributions of Italian immigrants and Italian Americans. It occurs in October to overlap with the federal holiday of Columbus Day, which is celebrated on the second Monday of each October. Italian American Heritage Month was first celebrated in 1989 by a special proclamation of both Congress and President George H.W. Bush.

Polish American Heritage Month graphic

We celebrate Polish American Heritage Month in October, but it was not always that way. Congress first deemed August as Polish American Heritage Month in 1981. Later, it moved to October to commemorate the first Polish settlers - as well as the deaths of General Kazimierz Pulaski and Tadeusz Kosciuszko (Military leaders who fought in the American Revolution). The switch also enabled schools to participate in celebrations. Whether you are Polish American or not, it is important to mark the culture of a people who helped shape this country. Polish Americans have contributed vastly to the United States Army in all components.

German American Heritage Month graphic

The first proclamation of German American Heritage Month was issued by Ronald Reagan in October 1987 and from then on, we have been celebrating every year. German American Heritage Day is October 6. On this day, German Americans settled in Pennsylvania. In October 1683, German families began settling in Pennsylvania. Since then, German Americans have contributed greatly to our society.

Hugely historical entrepreneurs such as Heinz, Chrysler, Boeing, and Rockefeller all have German American heritage. We have the German Americans to thank for a lot of our culture and society and it's important that they get the acknowledgment they deserve. There are major annual events in cities with German heritage including Chicago, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, San Antonio and St. Louis.

Cleveland Clinic has partnered with the Brakes for Breasts organization. Brakes for Breasts is an organization that unites the hands of Independent Auto Repair Shops during the month of October. The participating repair shop provides their customers with free brake pads and the customer simply pays for the labor and any other parts that may be needed. The shop then donates 10% of that total to the Cleveland Clinic's Breast Cancer Vaccine Fund.

Dr. Tuohy and his team at the Cleveland Clinic have successfully tested a Breast Cancer Prevention Vaccine in his lab and are working to take it to human trials.

2022 marks the 12th year that Brakes for Breasts has raised money to support the Cleveland Clinic's effort to stamp out breast cancer. With the help of over 175 independent automotive repair shops, the initiative has raised over $1.4 million to assist Dr. Tuohy and his team.

The PaYS team is extremely proud to call Cleveland Clinic a partner and we fully support their efforts in this critical fight!

Transition Assistance Program (TAP) - 2022 Symposium

https://www.army.mil/article/260722/fort_knox_hosts_biannual_tap_symposium

FORT KNOX, Ky. ‐ About 150 Transition Assistance Program personnel from the 60 Army TAP centers around the world connected with one another over a three-day biannual training symposium Sept. 27-29 at Fort Knox.

The Transition Assistance Program, which is headquartered at Fort Knox, is the agency that helps Soldiers successfully transition into the civilian sector after separating from the Army. According to Stacie Provine, TAP strategic communication director, the agency provides critical instruction, training, and resources to help service members and their Families make that shift.

Provine said representatives from nationwide companies also spoke at the symposium to inform attendees about ways their organizations can help Soldiers.

"We also have people from different businesses here to talk about the different hiring programs they offer for veterans," said Provine. "They come in here and speak, and our TAP folks can take that information back with them and share it with their Soldiers."

This year's symposium featured opportunities for TAP counselors, administrators and managers to share best practices, network with one another, and learn ways to improve how they can better serve Soldiers and Families with their transition from Army life to civilian life.

"By coming together, we can share the tricks of the trade or what's the best thing to do," said Provine. "Just all being under the same roof where we can talk directly with each other is so beneficial." Walter Herd, Director, TAP, provides opening remarks during the symposium

PaYS Program Manager, Antonio Johnson was invited to the symposium to provide a PaYS update to the TAP personnel in attendance. Antonio discussed the rebranding strategy and introduced the new PaYS logo and name change. Antonio also presented the redesigned process that will allow Soldiers to select PaYS Partners at the end of service obligation. The PaYS IT Team was also in attendance and conducted a live demonstration of the new direct sign-up page that Soldiers will begin using to register for PaYS. TAP personnel provided positive feedback and expressed their anticipation for implementation of the new process as it will allow for counselors to assist transitioning Soldiers in selecting their PaYS Partners for guaranteed interviews.

Walter Herd, Director, Army TAP stated, "Once these changes are fully implanted, PaYS will be a game-changer for transitioning Soldiers."

On average, TAP supports about 100,000 transitioning Soldiers from all components each year.
