Veterans Day originated as "Armistice Day" on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a National Holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American Veterans - living or dead - but especially gives thanks to living Veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.
Aviation History Month is celebrated every year in November, recognizing all the contributions America made to the field of aviation and its development. Yes, it's safe to say the U.S. played a pivotal role in the field. Hence, this month is all about reading up on the history of aviation or simply watching documentaries that shed light on the brilliant individuals who dedicated their lives to advancing the aviation industry. It is the accomplishments of these men and women that make Americans proud, even to this day!
Every year in November, Native American Heritage Month is celebrated to honor the remarkable Native Americans who have contributed a lot to improve the character of the Nation. November is the time to rejoice in diverse and rich cultures, histories, and traditions and to appreciate the great contributions of the Native Americans. This month allows us to spread awareness about tribes or to educate people about the various challenges faced by the Native Americans in the past and today. Throughout this month, we commit to keep on supporting the remaining Native American tribes and let the world know about their sacrifices.
The first time American Indian Day was declared was in May 1916. In 1990, a joint resolution was approved by George H.W. Bush, which called for November to be named National American Heritage Month. Declarations like these have been issued since 1994, such as Native American Heritage Month and National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.

City of Chicago Honors Veterans Day

On November 11th, 2022, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), and the entire City will honor local and national Veterans during this year's Veterans Day Ceremony at Soldier Field. The ceremony will be held inside Gate O of Chicago's famed Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears.
In an interview with DCASE staff, Mayor Lightfoot stated, "Veterans Day allows us to honor our heroes, the men and women who wore our Nation's uniform and proudly served their country". We must demonstrate our gratitude to Veterans and their families by fulfilling our obligations to them and ensuring they have the resources they earned for their sacrifices and contributions to our country."
The ceremony will take place in front of the statue of Doughboy, an informal term for members of the United States Army and Marine Corps, especially members of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Soldier Field was named as such at the request of Gold Star Mothers to honor the men lost in World War I. The Doughboy statue, originally placed in Garfield Park, was restored and installed in Soldier Field as part of the stadium's renovation. The nearby benches for moments of reflection contain notable quotations about service to country and actual Armed Forces Medals of Honor cast into the backrests.

The City of Chicago has been a proud PaYS Partner since 2010 and is a national leader in providing support services for Chicagoland's nearly 400,000 Veterans. These services include programs that assist Veterans with housing, entrepreneurship, employment, education, and legal assistance.
Army PaYS Celebrates National Aviation History Month

When it comes to Aviation History Month in November, there's plenty to celebrate. From the first balloons sent up into the atmosphere, to every device invented that elevated humans above the earth, our imaginations have been captured by the idea of flight. In honor of National Aviation History Month, the PaYS Team would like to recognize PaYS Partners The Boeing Company and Soutwest Airlines for making it happen in aviation.

With more than 60,000 employees and a net income of over $2.3 Billion, Southwest Airlines operates nearly 4,000 flights daily.
Southwest Airlines was incorporated in Texas and commenced Customer Service on June 18, 1971, with three Boeing 737 aircraft serving three Texas cities (Houston, Dallas and San Antonio) and grew to become a major airline in 1989 when it exceeded the billion-dollar revenue mark. In 1994, Southwest Airlines became the first major airline to offer ticketless travel. In 2013, Southwest started its Southwest service to a destination outside the 48 contiguous states with service to Puerto Rico. In July 2014, Southwest became an international airline with its first flights to Nassau, Bahamas; Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Aruba, and continues to expand. In March 2019, Southwest began serving the Hawaiian Islands.

Association of the United States Army 2022 Annual Conference:
Building the Army of 2030

 Going down the escalator into the conference hall, a tank appears. As the view opens, small robotic creatures move, people stand in front of a helicopter, trucks with missile launchers are waiting, virtual reality stations are ready, weapons are on display and more. To the Army, this is just another wonderful day at the AUSA Conference.
The PaYS Team shared exhibit space with Soldier for Life at the conference while promoting PaYS awareness to the many partners, Soldiers and other stakeholders that stopped by to visit.
PaYS Program Manager, Antonio Johnson stated, "The AUSA Conference is another example of the collaborative effort between PaYS and Soldier for Life. This was a great opportunity to inform and educate people on the benefits of the PaYS partnership."
General Dynamics Electric Boat, Booz Allen Hamilton, BAE Systems, L3 Communications, Oshkosh Corp., The Boeing Company, Akima LLC, Airbus Helicopter Inc., Raytheon and Chenega Corporation were among the PaYS Partners in attendance at the event.

The first day of the largest annual land warfare exposition in North America started off with a keynote address by Army Secretary Christine Wormuth. This three-day in-person event featured more than 700 exhibits in five halls on both levels of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, in Washington, D.C.
"Building the Army of 2030" was the theme of this year's meeting and the PaYS Team caught up with GEN Gary Brito, Commanding General, TRADOC, and asked him to expand on what that meant to him. GEN Brito stated, "This effort includes advances in training, doctrine, capabilities, technology and more as  we're modernizing the Army it's important to modernize the programs as well including recruiting and outreach."
GEN Brito also spoke to the audience at the conference in a forum titled "In a War for Talent --- Recruiting, Retention and Opportunity."
GEN Brito said, "This is a big, total team effort. We will succeed. ...In order to deliver the Army of 2030 and get ready for 2040, we'll continue to be innovative in our talent management approach, and we will turn this recruiting challenge into an opportunity and continue to march forward."
From start to finish the conference was jam-packed full of supportive people learning about the PaYS Program and how we provide America's Soldiers with an opportunity to serve their country while they prepare for their future. Connecting America's business community to America's Army one Soldier at a time…one partnership at a time. We enjoyed speaking with Future Soldiers from VMI to West Point as well as Soldiers who were interested in learning more about the program to take the information back to their companies at home.

PaYS Signing Ceremonies

The PaYS Signing Ceremony solidifies the formal partnership and allows new partners to begin granting guaranteed interviews for transitioning Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve Soldiers. This month, we welcome Riverside Healthcare, Molex, Securatech, Transocean, Good Foods Group, and General Dynamics Electric Boat.
A signing ceremony was conducted at the Riverside Medical Center located in Kankakee, IL. Representing Riverside Healthcare was CEO, Phil Kambic and Director of Talent Acquisition, Tim Weston. Representing the Army were LTC Shane Doolan, Chicago Recruiting Battalion Commander.
 
During the ceremony, Mr. Kambic stated, "We are extremely grateful to the U.S. Army for providing us with the freedom to carry out our organization's mission." He later stated, "these Soldiers are precisely who we are looking to employ as they are highly skilled, motivated and dedicated."
Riverside Healthcare is a fully integrated healthcare system serving the needs of patients throughout the Illinois counties of Kankakee, Iroquois, Grundy and beyond. The PaYS team is extremely excited to welcome the company to the Army family and is more than confident that they will add value to the U.S. Army!

Molex LLC, located in Lincoln, NE joined the Partnership for Your Success (PaYS) Program. Signing the Ceremonial Agreement for Molex, LLC was Mr. Michael Walkowiak, Senior Human Resources Business Partner (SHRBP), and representing the Nebraska National Guard was MG Daryl Bohac, Adjutant General. As a special guest, Nebraska Governor, Pete Ricketts spoke about the PaYS Program and the State of Nebraska.
MG Bohac had this to say, "In today's world, we are all competing for the same talent, but rather than competing, we are partnering and sharing that talent. It's a win-win situation for all of us. An Army Reserve Component member doesn't have to wait until they retire to come to a company like Molex."
After MG Bohac's remarks he was followed by Mike Walkowiak, Senior Human Resources Business Partner, Molex, LLC. Mr. Walkowiak stated, "We (Molex, LLC) are honored to work with the U.S. Army to promote the success of our Soldiers and Cadets, and we are looking forward to a great relationship building our future together."
Molex, LLC is a manufacturer of electronic, electrical, and fiber optic connectivity systems. Molex, LLC offers over 100,000 products across a variety of industries, including data communications, medical, industrial, automotive and consumer electronics. The company is considered the second largest electronic connector company in the world.

Securatech recently celebrated their partnership with the U.S. Army and the Great Lakes Army Recruiting Battalion. The signing ceremony was conducted during the company's grand opening event at their location in Farmington Hills, MI.
In attendance, representing Securatech was Rudy Patros, Chief Executive Officer and Abbie Jackson, Human Resources Manager and representing the Army was LTC Robert Heffner, Commander, Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion.
During the ceremony, Mr. Patros stated, "Securatech custom designs, installs, and services security equipment. Also, with Guard Services as a part of the business, a rigorous screening and training process is followed when it comes to hiring Security Guards and protection details. With that, I am confident the Soldiers available within this program will possess the qualities we are looking for to fill these open positions."

A signing ceremony was conducted at the Transocean Headquarters in Houston, TX.
 
The partnership between the U.S Army and Transocean was signed by LTG Maria Gervais, Deputy Commanding General / Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command and Ms. Janelle Daniel, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Sustainability and Communications, Transocean.
During the ceremony LTG Gervais stated, "The partnership is a win-win for both Transocean, the Army and our transitioning Soldiers for Life."

Mr. Jeremy Thigpin, CEO, Transocean was the guest speaker at the ceremony. Mr. Thigpin stated,"The Army PaYS Program provides an excellent opportunity for Transocean to demonstrate its gratitude to the brave men and women who sacrificed their freedom that we enjoy every day. The PaYS Program provides Transocean access to an outstanding pool of talented people."

Good Foods Group, LLC forged their PaYS Partnership during a ceremony at the Good Foods Group Headquarters in Pleasant Prairie, WI. BG Matthew Strub, Deputy Adjutant General, Wisconsin Army National Guard (WIARNG) and Mr. Jeffrey McMahon, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Good Foods Group, LLC participated in the ceremonial signing of the agreement.
BG Strub stated, "This partnership provides opportunities for our Soldiers and allows Good Foods Group, LLC. to have access to quality employees. Which in turns helps builds a stronger community".
Good Foods Group, LLC is a maker of simple clean delicious foods you can feel. They specialize in products such as dips, chicken salads, dressings and guacamole. Good Foods Group, LLC focuses on state-of-the-art processes, eco-friendly initiatives and food safety as a priority.

General Dynamics Electric Boat conducted their ceremony at the Electric Boat Education Center in Westerly, RI. BG Ralph Hedenberg, Assistant Adjutant General, Connecticut Army National Guard (CTARNG) hosted the ceremony for the Army which also included Emil Casiano, Vice President, General Dynamics Electric Boat.
During the ceremony, BG Hedenberg stated, "As long as I can remember there have always been Soldiers, Airmen, retirees, and family members who have been or employed by General Dynamics Electric Boat. We would like to recognize General Dynamics Electric Boat for seeing that our Soldiers are professionals that offer sought after experience skill sets, leadership, discipline, strong work ethics, decision making capability and are able to work as a part of a team".
Mr. Casiano followed by saying, "Electric Boat core values and the Army values are very similar which makes it an easy partnership. Soldiers are Patriots and can continue to be Patriots when they join General Dynamic Electric Boat".
General Dynamics Electric Boat, established in 1899, has standards of excellence in the design, construction and lifecycle support of submarines for the U.S. Navy. The current workforce is more than 14,000 employees. At Electric Boat, they recognize the value of our Military service men and women bring to the workforce and they welcome their unique skills and experience that come from service our country.

Marketing Trips

The month was filled with productive marketing trips discussing the opportunities that PaYS provides as Soldiers transition from the Army to interviewing with up to five of our 1100 PaYS Partners.
 
PaYS Marketing Analyst Michael O'Brien recently visited the Houston Army Recruiting Battalion to promote the Army PaYS Program and strengthen relationships with stakeholders.
During the visit, Michael was able to meet with the North Channel Area Chamber of Commerce and the Houston West Chamber of Commerce to discuss the Army PaYS Program and the strategic initiatives of working together to bring more Fortune 500 Companies into the Army PaYS Program. Both Chambers of Commerce were excited to assist with helping our transitioning Soldiers.
During his trip to Houston, Michael also met with the Houston Recruiting Battalion Commander, LTC Samuel Kim and the Chief A&PA, Ms. Christa Thomas to discuss Army PaYS and strategic initiatives moving forward. The Houston Battalion is excited about the future of the Army PaYS Program and how it will help our Soldiers.

PaYS Marketing Analyst Davin Bentley recently visited the Greater Cleveland metro area to promote the PaYS Program with our partners in the area.
Davin had the opportunity to discuss community engagement and the PaYS Program with Gregory Becker, Chief, Advertising and Public Affairs for the Cleveland Army Recruiting Battalion.
Davin later that day provided an overview of the PaYS Program to several employers at the 2022 Greater Cleveland Partnership IT Week Employer Luncheon. Many current PaYS Partners were in attendance as well as potential partners that expressed interest in collaborating with the program.
The trip was very rewarding as Davin had the opportunity to meet with current PaYS Partners: Crown Equipment, Herc Rentals and Goodyear Tire and Rubber.

PaYS Marketing Analyst Crancena Ross, visited the Albany Recruiting Battalion. During the visit Crancena had the pleasure to conduct an Army PaYS Overview to the leadership of the Albany Army Recruiting Battalion, in Hartford, CT. In attendance was the Battalion Commander, Company Commanders, Station Commanders and members of the Military Entrance Processing Station.
The following day, Crancena visited the City of Torrington, CT. There she conducted a PaYS Overview with Mayor Elinor Carbone and her staff. Mayor Carbone stated, "That the City of Torrington looks forward to partnering with the Army PaYS Program." After the overview, the city completed initial documents to start the partnership process.

PaYS Marketing Analysts Travis Carter and Samuel Armstrong recently traveled to Phoenix, AZ and surrounding areas for a marketing trip.
Upon their arrival, Travis and Samuel visited the Phoenix Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) to meet with the Army National Guard Guidance Counselors. They met SFC Mark Jones and Mr. Theodore Wilson. Travis discussed the PaYS Program with them, asking questions and inquiring if they need any help with anything.

After leaving MEPS, Travis and Samuel went to visit the Arizona Army National Guard (AZARNG) Recruiting and Retention Battalion (RRB) Command team. LTC Gordon Smith (Commander), CSM Christopher Llewellyn (Command Sergeant Major) and SGM Johnathan Acosta spoke to Travis and Samuel about PaYS and how to utilize it for their recruiting efforts. LTC Smith stated, "We want to make sure we are using this program to its fullest potential, not only is it good for our soldiers, but it is also good for our State and businesses.
 Giving businesses the opportunity to hire our Soldiers will help solve the hiring crisis we are seeing, and hopefully help us with our recruiting efforts."
The marketing team then visited Glendale Police Department. SGT Jay Davidge was happy to see Travis and Samuel. Glendale Police Department is very Military friendly when it comes to hiring and wanted to make sure they were up to date on everything PaYS. SGT Jay Davidge stated, "We love hiring Soldiers, this program is just another opportunity for us to do so. I want to make sure we are up to date on how to use it, so we are not missing any chances at a good quality hire."

The PaYS Team Welcomes Thomas Parker
Please join us in welcoming our newest team member, Thomas Parker.
Thomas Parker is a native of Ahoskie, NC. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in February 1998. After graduating with a bachelor's degree, Thomas received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant at Elizabeth City State University's ROTC Program in December 2002. He completed the Air Defense Artillery Officers' Basic Course at Fort Bliss, Texas in 2003. He then completed Combined Logistics Officer Advanced Course at Fort Lee, Virginia where he became a Multifunctional Logistician. Later, he served as the 10th Regional Support Group Plans Officer, at Torii Station, Okinawa, Japan where he facilitated 11 PACOM Exercises in the Pacific area of operation.
As a broadening assignment, he served as an Executive Officer in United States Army Recruiting Command for Fresno Recruiting Battalion, Fresno, California. Thomas deployed multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon redeployment, he completed United States Army Command and General Staff Officers' College. He received his master's degree from Trident University in Education and Administration. Thomas recently retired from the Army at the rank of Major and is going to call Hampton Roads, Virginia home.
Thomas' awards and decorations include but are not limited to, Bronze Star Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Air Assault Badge.
Thomas will provide leadership and guidance in his role as Project Lead on the PaYS Team.
Farewell
The PaYS Team would like to bid Joseph "JR" Rivers, a fond farewell. JR is leaving his position as PaYS Project Lead for new opportunities.
During his six-year tenure with PaYS, JR was instrumental administering 573 new PaYS Partnerships.
The PaYS Team appreciates JR's numerous contributions and his dedication to the Program. We wish JR good health and continued success in his future endeavors.
