Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Day
Martin Luther King Day is observed every year on the third Monday of January, which falls on January 16 in 2023. Dr. King was an influential civil rights leader, best known for his work on racial equality and ending racial segregation in the United States. His life and achievements are remembered and celebrated on this day. In his final sermon before he was assassinated, he said "Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's Theory of Relativity to serve. You don't have to know the Second Theory of Thermodynamics and Physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
Signing Ceremonies

The PaYS Signing Ceremony solidifies the formal partnership between the Army and a company that allows new partners to guarantee job interviews for transitioning Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve Soldiers after their service obligation. This month, we welcome VyStar Credit Union, BCH Mechanical, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Culver's Franchising System, LLC.
VyStar Credit Union was established 70 years ago when 12 founding members wanted to create a safe place for Military and civil service members to save and borrow money. They are headquartered in Jacksonville, FL. VyStar has grown to serve anyone who lives or works within the area of service from Central Florida through Georgia. They offer a comprehensive selection of products, including deposit and loan services for consumers and business, as well as investments, insurance, retirement planning and financial counseling.

BG Richard Harrison, Deputy Chief of Staff, TRADOC G-3/5/7 hosted the ceremony for the Army along with Brian Wolfburg, President and CEO, VyStar Credit Union and Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army (CASA) Allie Braswell, Central Florida.

During the ceremony, BG Harrison stated, "This partnership is about helping the Army build the ranks and providing opportunities for our Soldiers".
BCH Mechanical has been a trusted name in Florida construction since 1976. Their team delivers innovative design, high quality craftsmanship and excellent customer service.
The ceremony was hosted by LTC Michael Norton, Commander, Tampa Recruiting Battalion along with CSM Ulises Morel. Mr. John Fields, BCH Mechanical President, was present for the event to sign the ceremonial certificate and speak on behalf of the company.

During the ceremony, LTC Norton said, "I want to thank you for recognizing and realizing the importance of linking high quality employees with high quality employers." After LTC Norton and Mr. Fields signed the ceremonial agreement, LTC Norton administered the Oath of Enlistment to two Army Future Soldiers. At the conclusion of the signing ceremony, Mr. Fields thanked everyone for attending and expressed how appreciative he was to partner with the U.S. Army.

The U.S. Army 1st Medical Recruiting Battalion and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) hosted their signing ceremony at the U.S. Steel Tower in Pittsburgh, PA. The ceremony began with a tour of the hospital, a $24 billion health care provider and insurer, Pittsburgh-based UPMC is inventing new models of patient-centered, cost-effective, accountable care.

The largest nongovernmental employer in Pennsylvania, UPMC integrates more than 92,000 employees, 40 hospitals, 800 doctors' offices and outpatient sites, and a more than 4-million-member Insurance Services Division, the largest medical insurer in western Pennsylvania. In the most recent fiscal year, UPMC contributed $1.5 billion in benefits to its communities, including more care to the region's most vulnerable citizens than any other health care institution, and paid more than $900 million in federal, state, and local taxes.

"I think the PaYS Program is wonderful," said Laura Maloney, manager of UPMC's Human Resources Operations. She also stated, "UPMC will find value in having access to well-trained Soldiers, either those who are currently serving in the Army Reserve, or those who are leaving the Army. "We need that kind of qualified person-someone who is passionate about taking care of our community."
BG Krueger, meanwhile, praised UPMC for signing on with PaYS and that it will assist many Soldiers as they transition into the civilian workforce. "It's not always clear to the Soldier how their skill sets are going to transition," said BG Krueger, who explained how Soldiers often struggle to translate their niche Military jobs-jobs such as flight medics, helicopter mechanics, or even door gunners-into a civilian career. For them, UPMC as a PaYS entity, will help connect the dots.
Culver's Franchising System, LLC is an American fast casual restaurant chain. The company was founded in 1984 by George, Ruth, Craig, and Lea Culver. The chain operates primarily in the Midwestern United States and has over 893 restaurants in 26 states.

LTC Shannon Hellenbrand, Commander, Wisconsin Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion, hosted the ceremony for the Army which also included Enrique Silva, President and CEO, Culver's Franchising System, LLC.

During the ceremony, LTC Hellenbrand stated, "Culvers and the Wisconsin Army National Guard have a lot in common: our values are aligned, and this partnership feels fitting. Both entities find sources of strength in our community members and although we "serve" in different ways, we are all committed to one another similarly".

Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, City of Tampa

The City of Tampa, PaYS Partner since 2007, will conduct their annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade. This parade is an exciting family-friendly event occurring on the National holiday commemorating the birth of one of our greatest American heroes, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The celebration grows every year and has proven to be a great forum to present the beautiful diversity of the Tampa Bay area.
Parade entries include floats, marching bands, equestrian groups and decorated vehicles of all types. Providing an opportunity for businesses, churches, community groups and local government officials to celebrate Dr. King's legacy and gain valuable exposure to the community they serve.
The 2023 MLK Parade in Tampa will be held on Monday, January 16, 2023, beginning at 12:00pm. If you're in the area, the parade begins at Cuscaden Park, 2901 N. 15th St., Tampa, FL 33605.

Army PaYS Partner Suburban Propane is proudly committed to recruiting and hiring Military personnel to fill job opportunities that they have available. Cameron Price, U.S. Army Veteran and PaYS Soldier, has joined their team as a Service Technician Apprentice. Following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, who served as an Infantryman in WWII, and his cousin, who served in the Army Special Forces, Cameron enlisted in the Army out of high school. He served from 2013-2018 as a Military Police Officer.
Cameron was drawn to Suburban Propane's Apprentice Program for its comprehensive curriculum and on-the-job training which would jumpstart his career as a Service Technician and help him obtain a Commercial Driver's License. Cameron feels that his time in the Military helped lay the foundation for a civilian career by building on his communication skills and ability to find ways to help people, no matter the job.
When asked if he had any advice for others transitioning out of the Military, Cameron said, "You can't beat an opportunity to work somewhere that helps Veterans while they're transitioning and are willing to train you. They're there to help support you."

Army Program Spotlight: Soldier for Life

Our spotlight program this month is Soldier for Life (SFL). SFL's mission is to engage and connect Army, governmental, and nongovernmental organizations to influence policies, programs and services that support Soldiers, Veterans and Families to reinforce the SFL mindset throughout the Soldier Life Cycle.
From its inception in 2009, the program has evolved through the years. When it started, employment was the primary focus as there had been a negative stigma about Veterans not being able to find a job after transitioning out of the Army. Due to the many opportunities that Veterans have now, the employment rate is much better and SFL is able to focus on health and wellness, education as well as community awareness, not only employment.
In October 2021, like the PaYS Program, SFL realigned under TRADOC greatly increasing the lines of effort to gain a larger return on investment for the Soldier, Army, and local communities. Our teams frequently collaborate to spread the word about what opportunities that are available to Soldiers while they are transitioning out of the Military.
The PaYS Team had an opportunity to spend some time with COL David Grant, Director of SFL, during our PaYS Annual Training. COL Grant stated, "One of the things we've been doing recently is speaking to command teams about the importance of having Soldiers prepared and making sure they are aware of the programs available to them. Encourage them to take advantage of professional opportunities while serving, personal and professional development, which allows the Soldier to be aware of tuition assistance/credential assistance, be better prepared for life after the Army throughout the lifecycle of the Army". He continued, "not just as they get out, but that it starts the day they finish basic training until the day they get out. They are literally a Soldier for Life."
COL Grant inspires the leadership of the Army to tie SFL to the recruiting mission because they can "take steps while our Soldiers are preparing so that when they transition out of the Army, they can be better ambassadors for the Army". COL Grant went on to say, "in some communities, that Veteran might be the only Veteran they know and if they are having a difficult time, public perception might make it harder. With SFL, we are a force multiplier as we help connect organizations together and amplify their message. We show the value of hiring a Veteran and how Veterans bring a certain willingness to accomplish the mission to their team."
If a company or a community is interested in learning more about hiring Veterans, and the value of hiring Veterans, contact the SFL office. They will find out what their needs are and bring in subject matter experts such as the Career Skills Program, RecruitMilitary, and PaYS so that the company can have one initial meeting with key players in this field and learn what the Army has to offer them.
When the Soldier's "expiration-term of service" is near, there is also a program that can help the Soldier with an ETS Sponsor. In collaboration with ETS Sponsorship, Soldiers are now agreeing to receive communication that has employment opportunities, health and wellness, or even a SFL motivational letter that keeps them in the informed and allows them to know their service is appreciated.
When COL Grant was asked what he really wants people to understand about SFL, he responded "I really want to emphasize the program is for all Soldiers who are serving whether you just got in or have been in for 10 years, it is for the entire lifecycle of their career. All Soldiers are going to be amazed about the information that they can find out in employment, health and wellness, education and community outreach. Remember, it starts the day you sign up."

The PaYS Team Welcomes Jack W. Main III and Louis Gill
Please join us in welcoming Jack Main.
Prior to joining the PaYS Team, Jack served in the U.S. Army for 22+ years as an Air Assault Artillerymen before being assigned as a recruiter in U.S. Army Recruiting Command (USAREC). He has served in every position in USAREC from recruiter to USAREC G-2 Senior Enlisted Advisor. He finished his time in TRADOC as the Accessions Information Environment SGM.
Jacks' hobbies include, any outdoor activities, spending time with Family and Friends. He is also involved with Scouting as a leader in both Cub and Boy Scouts. Jack stated, "I am extremely happy for the opportunity to continue providing to the organization that has taken care of myself and Family. Looking forward on expanding the external network of Accessions and taking care of future service members post Army career options."
Jack will support the 3rd Recruiting Brigade in the Midwest Region as a PaYS Marketing Analyst.
The PaYS Team also welcomes Louis Gill.
Mr. Gill currently resides in San Antonio, TX with his wife of 21 years and their three children. He is a Retired Army Veteran with over 20 years of active Military Service. While his Military Occupational Specialty was Military Police, he was very fortunate to be assigned to the 5th Recruiting Brigade from 2008-2012 earning the Army Recruiter Ring and several Top Small Station awards.
His hobbies include spending time with his wife and kids and going to the shooting range. When Louis found out about the PaYS Program opportunity, he stated "I'm thrilled to become a member of the Team and looking forward to working with everyone to meet and exceed all our goals together."
Louis will support the 5th Recruiting Brigade in the Southwest Region as a PaYS Marketing Analyst.
