From Suffrage Day to Women’s Equality Day –
Mary Jane Jernigan -
CASA - Maryland (North)
By: Crancena Ross
Celebrating and recognizing women's equality means taking the time to reflect on how women have advanced within society. For example, the Nineteenth Amendment officially gave women a voice to exercise by voting. We reached out to Ms. Mary Jane Jernigan, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army (CASA), Maryland (North), for her view on women's equality.
CASA Jernigan shared, "As I look back over my life, I spent too much energy focusing on what I thought was unattainable when all along, if it's thinkable, it's reachable and if it's reachable, it's attainable. My mother raised my siblings and I with a strong will to move with certainty, to do our best, and not be concerned about competing to be the best." CASA Jernigan mentioned, "My mother was the first woman in the South to say a prayer in a Baptist Church and as a child, I didn't understand the big deal behind it until I was older and realized, women at that time, were not allowed in the pulpit. Today, there are female ministers who share the gospel, exemplifying a phenomenal step for female pastors nationwide."
CASA Jernigan went on to say, "I'm not saying all the issues are resolved for women, I will say they have improved. What women have always brought to the table is so valuable, as women can be strong and tough, yet fostering and empathetic leaders within our society, capable through crisis and enduring changes. As evident throughout history, women can achieve the goals they put their minds and hearts towards." CASA Jernigan concluded with, "The recognition and designation of women's equality means that the world officially acknowledges the true value of women across all cultures worldwide."
Women's equality means having equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of others. Despite all the social movements, unions and advancements that have occurred over the last century, women continue to fight for equality.
PaYS recognizes Purple Heart Recipients, SFC (R) Roberto Mercado and SFC (R) Noelle Woods
By: Joey Whitaker and Victor Fleming
Purple Heart Day is recognized annually on August 7th. It is a day to remember men and women who bravely represented their country and were wounded or killed while serving. This year, PaYS would like to recognize Purple Heart Recipients, SFC (R) Roberto Mercado and SFC (R) Noelle Woods for their service.
SFC (R) Roberto Mercado
Please share a little about yourself and your experience.
"I was born in Manhattan, NY, but I was raised in Puerto Rico. I enlisted the Army in 2001 at the age of 17. My MOS was 92S, a Laundry and Textile Specialist. I've been on three combat tours, all to Iraq, serving a total of 20 years, retiring in 2021."
Can you briefly share the story of how you received a purple heart award?
“While deployed to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Sheik Amir on April 10, 2008, my unit’s mission was to provide field services to an Infantry unit from Hawaii. As the Non-Commissioned Officer-in-Charge (NCOIC) of my team, I was required to send a daily personnel status (PERSTATS) and equipment status report to our higher headquarters unit located on Camp Victory. On this day while sending up the PERSTATS, the landline was cut off. So, I immediately went to send the status from a different location.
While attempting to send the report, my team was under fire from a group of armed local nationals with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). Unfortunately, nine service members were injured in the attack including me, and four service members were killed in action.”
What advice would you give to others who have been injured in the line of duty and may be struggling with their recovery?
"There's not a one size fits all piece of advice that I can give to any Servicemember going through the hardships of returning home from combat injured. Combat is nasty, cruel, and unforgiving. Having someone to talk to helps, and having a great support system also helps. Ensure that you speak with your medical team and stay on top of your health because there are people who depend on you. For me, faith is what has gotten me through it. If I can leave anyone with what helped me, Faith is it! I'll leave you with one of my favorite Bible verses.
'Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will direct your path.'"
What is your current occupation post-military?
"Once I retired, I knew I wanted to stay busy, so I applied for a few different jobs that fit my degree and what I kind of planned and prepared for. I got hired by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) as a Contract Administrator and I have been loving it ever since."
SFC (R) Noelle Wood
Tell us where you're from and a little bit about your Army service.
"I was born in South Carolina and joined the Army out of Amarillo, TX as a 19K, M1 Abrams Tanker. I served 16 years on active duty with two deployments to Afghanistan. I currently serve as the Unit Administrator for the Oklahoma City East Recruiting Company. I love helping bridge the gap between servicemembers and the community."
Left - SFC Woods pictured with his wife, Kaytlyn
Can you briefly share the story of how you received the Purple Heart?
"On January 10th, 2010, our Platoon was on the way back from a night mission and my Stryker hit an IED on the right, engine side, of the Stryker. The blast was central of the engine compartment, large enough to punch through the armor and cause major damage to the interior of the vehicle. Not only was the vehicle on fire, but all our crew members were also injured. I was blown out of the turret. The driver's face was shattered, and he obtained a broken leg. Meanwhile, the gunner had several lacerations and a dislocated shoulder. As for me, I escaped with multiple leg lacerations and shrapnel marking, dislocated shoulder, herniations in L5-S1, and a traumatic brain injury also known as (TBI)."
What advice would you give to others who have been injured in the line of duty and may need help transitioning into life after service?
"My best advice is to stay away from substances and become familiar with the resources available to you. Create and maintain a healthy lifestyle by staying active, as it helps to pass time and keep your mind off stressors that may cause you physical or emotional pain. Finally, attend your medical and psychological appointments. Remember, there are people out there who work to keep Veterans and transitioning Soldiers on the right track. Now is the time to take care of YOU!"
