Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day:
Honoring Sacrifice, Reflecting on Resilience

By: PaYS Staff

On Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we bow our heads in reverence to the heroes who faced the crucible of war on December 7, 1941. Eighty-two years ago, the sun rose over the tranquil waters of Pearl Harbor, forever altering the course of history. As we remember the lives lost and the indomitable spirit that emerged from the ashes, let us also renew our commitment to peace. We honor the fallen, express gratitude to the Veterans and pledge to cultivate a world where the lessons of history guide us toward unity.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial The Pearl Harbor National Memorial serves as a sacred space for reflection, education, and commemoration, ensuring that the stories of heroism and sacrifice will endure. Nestled in the heart of Hawaii, the Memorial honors the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who faced the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor. Additionally, the USS Arizona Memorial, a striking feature of the site, spans the sunken remains of the battleship. The wreckage of the USS Arizona remains as a monument to the events of World War II and to the legacy of those who sacrificed their lives to preserve our most cherished values and secure victory.

This year, our PaYS partner, State of Hawaii, Island of Oahu will hold the National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony December 7, 2023 at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. The ceremony begins at 7:30 am to signify the surprise attack that was launched just before 8:00 am December 7, 1941 on a United States naval base at Pearl Harbor killing more than 2,400 Americans. Each year on this day Survivors, Veterans, and visitors from all over the world come together in remembrance and honor.

PaYS recognizes our partners in Hawaii, EAN Holdings LLC, Hawaii State Government, McDonalds Restaurants of Hawaii, Inc. and New York Life Hawaii.

387 Years Strong:
Honoring the National Guard's legacy and the viral role of the National Guard Bureau

National Guard Bureau logo

By: Travis Carter

The National Guard Bureau (NGB) plays a pivotal role in supporting and coordinating activities for the National Guard, and on the occasion of the National Guard's 387th birthday, it is essential to recognize the Bureau's contributions. Established on December 13, 1636, the National Guard has a rich history of service to both state and the Nation. The NGB, headquartered in Arlington, VA, serves as the channel of communication between the state National Guard units and the federal government. It facilitates the organization, training, and equipping of the Guard to ensure its readiness for both state emergencies and national defense.

GEN Daniel Hokanson, Chief, National Guard Bureau

The National Guard's 387th birthday provides an opportunity to acknowledge the Bureau's commitment to maintaining a strong and capable force. With approximately 39% of the U.S. Army's operational force, and over 21,000 now deployed overseas, the 325,000 - strong Army National Guard remains a fully integrated part of the Army. GEN Daniel Hokanson, Chief, National Guard Bureau said, "This is an important and pivotal time in the history of our National Guard. We face complex missions overseas, and here at home, as evidenced when over 120,000 Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen mobilized in response to COVID-19, civil disturbance, overseas deployments, homeland defense and disaster response missions." NGB hosted a ceremonial cake cutting reception on December 8th where GEN Hokanson and other senior leaders shared remarks followed by the National Guard Gala in Arlington, VA on December 9th.

Happy Birthday Army National Guard! Thank you for your commitment to our Country.

Marketing Analysts Raymond Snow and Samuel Armstrong attended the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Conference in Chicago, IL. Marketers engaged with national and local business leaders. The team received a comprehensive walk-through of the event area and actively participated in various panel discussions, fostering connections with the University of Chicago Illinois ROTC cadre and other organizations. Notably, discussions with Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army (CASA) Steven Herman (Illinois - North) opened avenues for potential partnerships in the Chicago area.

Over the subsequent two days, the PaYS team seized the opportunity to connect with existing partners such as Dominion Energy, Southwest, and Cintas during the career expo. The team also networked with prospective partners, exchanging information to explore potential collaborations with PaYS. Raymond Snow and Samuel Armstrong with Cintas representatives

Joshua Keller

Army Veteran, Joshua Keller, hired by Chenega Corporation recounts his military career.

By: PaYS StaffChenega Corporation logo

PaYS Partner, Chenega Corporation is a diverse government services contracting marketplace supporting defense, intelligence, and federal Civilian customers. Joshua Keller, Talent Acquisition Operations Lead, shares his Army experience with PaYS Marketing Analyst Crancena Ross.

Why did you join the Army?

I joined the Army to serve something greater, having some of my earliest memories of 9/11 in elementary school, also for career stability, and to be able to work through my education. My MOS was 19K M1 Armor Crewman.

How did you learn of the PaYS Program?

I found out about the Army PaYS program through the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) counselors at Ft. Belvoir, VA while I was supporting a job fair. I knew that this was a program I wanted to be a part of and to share with Chenega Corporation.

Share your experience in connecting with Chenega Corporation.

Chenega was the end of the road for my transition. I had been in transition, out of the Army for nearly three years when I landed at Chenega and finally felt my transition phase was complete.

If Chenega was your first position after service, how was the transition from the Army to Chenega Corporation?

Chenega was not my first employer after military service. I had an unplanned and unexpected transition. I had just recently reenlisted and sustained an injury during an overseas training exercise, leading to a Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) and medical retirement. I was 22 with no plans outside the military. I had to move home to be closer to my support structure, compete for jobs outside my areas of interest and expertise to support my family. I worked security, labor, customer service, recruiting, corrections, and eventually found a role at Chenega where I could be a part of affecting change and supporting Veterans in transition.

How did your military experience help with your current position at Chenega Corporation?

My Army experience and my transition had helped me be successful in holding myself accountable and retaining my Army Values, retention of the Army Values after exit of service can allow an individual to set themselves up for success in any endeavor. This coupled with my own transition experience has fueled my passion for helping Servicemembers in transition.

Chenega is a partner with the Army PaYS Program. Do you see the partnership with Army PaYS benefitting your company?

I do. Although PaYS as it currently exists, relies heavily on Soldiers having brand recognition of a company to select them, PaYS recognizes smaller businesses like Chenega and creates opportunities to present themselves in front of Soldiers that they might not have had exposure to.

What advice do you have for Soldiers reaching out to PaYS Partners?

Reach out to as many as you can, not only your top five. There are hundreds of PaYS partners with dedicated passionate individuals running the program that will never hear from you or know you exist if you don't list them on your top five. The top five should be your starting point, not your end game.
