By: Matthew Green

As June rolled in, so did the celebration of one of the most esteemed institutions in American history - the United States Army, celebrating 249 years. Every year on June 14th, the nation commemorates the Army Birthday, honoring its rich heritage, sacrifices, and dedication to safeguarding the ideals of liberty and freedom.

Army National Guard and Army Reserve sealsSan Francisco Elk Lodge #3 graphicAs the Army celebrates its 249th birthday, San Francisco Elk Lodge #3, an institution with nearly 125 years of history, hosted a special cake cutting ceremony to commemorate the United States Army Birthday. Furthermore, the Wasatch Front combined celebration in Farmington, UT, served as a significant occasion to commemorate the Army's past, present, and future while influencing local recruitment dynamics. In Portland, OR the festivities extended to media platforms with Soldiers sharing insights on the Army's history, recruitment process, and benefits through interviews on Hello Rose City, amplifying the Army's presence and outreach in the region. Additionally, in Honolulu, HI, the recruiting Battalion collaborated with the 25th ID Band for a musical performance and mass Future Soldier swear-in ceremony, engaging the community in celebrating the Army's 249th birthday with enthusiasm and pride. These multifaceted events highlighted the Army's commitment to its heritage, community engagement, and recruitment initiatives across diverse regions.

PaYS Birthdays and anniversaries

What influence has your Caribbean culture played in your role as the CASA of the US Virgin Islands?

The Caribbean, and the Virgin Islands in particular, is known for being a melting pot of various cultures. Persons from Jamaica, Trinidad, Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, St. Lucia, Haiti, Puerto Rico, St Kitts & Nevis, the Dominican Republic, and other Caribbean islands all reside in the Virgin Islands. This exposure to a variety of cultures has provided varied perspectives, made me more adaptive and has allowed for a greater awareness of the range of sentiments towards the military.

The U.S. Virgin Islands recently partnered with the Army PaYS Program. What does this mean for Soldiers and businesses in the territory?

Hopefully, the partnership means more job opportunities for our Soldiers. While the guaranteed job interviews are great, I would like to see more Soldiers employed and a reduction in the unemployment rate for our Soldiers.

If you had the opportunity to talk to a younger you, what advice would you give yourself?

Join the Army and "Be All You Can Be". Take full advantage of the available opportunities and formulate an exit strategy that includes education, gainful employment, and financial stability.

REEVES A COLAS COMPANY HIRES VETERAN, DARCY OVERBEY

By: Victor Fleming

Reeves a Colas Company logo

Reeves a Colas Company is a construction company that specializes in infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, airports, and highways. They support Veterans amidst the challenges of transitioning into Civilian life by actively participating in the PaYS Program, and offering employment opportunities to Veterans, like Darcy Overbey. Ms. Overbey shared her transition story with PaYS.

Darcy Overbey

Darcy OverbeyPlease share your motivation for becoming a Servicemember.

My Grandfather served in the Air Force during WWII. His buddies and their families had a reunion every year. I loved hearing about their celebrations and how much they looked forward to the next one. That camaraderie stood out in my young mind, so military service always appealed to me. I didn't really learn anything about the Army until a college classmate introduced me to ROTC. I immediately felt like I belonged. I did 3 years with ROTC and received my commission as a Military Police Officer (31A). My original plan of only serving for four years turned into 27 years.

How did you learn of the PaYS Program?

A co-worker introduced me to the PaYS program this year. I am impressed with the programs available to transitioning Servicemembers. There are so many opportunities to help us prepare for our next careers.

Share your experience in connecting with Reeves Construction Company.

COVID impacted my transition, so I spent a lot of time job searching online. While most postings had very detailed job descriptions that bordered on being prescriptive, the one I found from Reeves was short and almost empowering. I sent in my resume and got a call back within a day. That phone conversation didn't even seem like an interview. It was more like catching up with a good friend. I knew, right then, that Reeves had the type of culture I was looking for in a company.

How was the transition from the Army to Reeves?

My transition into my first job, post Army, was easy. Besides having different acronyms and titles, the construction industry is very similar to how the Army operates. The culture at Reeves also supported my transition. Their core values are very close to the Army's Values- integrity, respect, and duty (except Reeves calls it teamwork and accountability), to name a few. My military experience comes in handy as I deal with a lot of different personalities. I support three different managers who have three different leadership styles. Besides being able to engage with leaders, I understand how to connect with field employees and make sure they are supported.

What advice do you have for Soldiers reaching out to PaYS partners?

My advice is to ask questions, especially if you are doing a career pivot. Talk to others going through the process, those who recently completed their transition and even those settled into a new career. Don't be afraid to explore other areas outside your military expertise. Looking for a job can be intimidating and exhausting. Trust your instincts and keep searching until you find one that feels right. I valued flexibility and autonomy; Reeves provided me the perfect position where I feel like I can succeed and make a difference.

Participants in the Amteck Signing Ceremony David Turner shared, "We are a family-owned company. We have roughly around 1,000 employees, and we try to stay as much of a family as we can. So, what I love about the PaYS program, and what anybody knows that served this country, is that it is a family. It's Americans who want to serve this country, and they do it for a reason. For us to be able to partner with a program like that and bring any of the other Servicemembers to our company is the biggest honor. I've always said the best employees who come to this company will be ones who served our country because of the dedication they have to care for others, their attention to detail, and the discipline and structure they go through. This program is so important to Amteck because we work throughout the country, and the Army is spread throughout the country. We work in 38 states and are licensed in 42 different states, so this program could work fantastic. As we continue to grow, we can bring on more Servicemembers."

Guest speaker, Rolland Smith, Executive Vice President, Amteck and retired Kentucky Guardsmen said, "Once you get back from basic training and you get your first job, it's time to learn your next job. It's the same with the electrical trade. We go to our apprenticeships, and we continue to learn from there," Smith attributed leadership to the reason for connecting Amteck and the U.S. Army.

Lastly, Linda Gorton, Mayor, Lexington, KY, shared during her remarks, "I want to thank the leadership of Amteck for coming together in this partnership with the U.S. Army and to bring this Partnership for Your Success Program to our city. And I am happy that you're sharing your success by creating opportunities for Servicemembers." Mayor Gorton went on to describe how PaYS program not only will benefit the Veterans who are looking for meaningful jobs, but how it will benefit Amteck as well. She said Veterans bring teamwork, dedication to a mission, and understanding of a work ethic that embodies good employees.

During her remarks, LTC Grace said, "When Veterans enlist, they're signed up for the PaYS program, guaranteeing five job interviews once they get out of the Army. Even though it's not a guarantee of a job - obviously, they still have to interview, they have to be qualified - it's a really great framework to build a plan for the future. The unknown is always going to be a little frightening. This partnership helps build a defined pathway with partners, that we know have good intentions in hiring, who are positive toward the Army, and will value the skills that Soldiers have gained in their time in service, that is so important."

Mr. Goebel said, "I think the biggest need that we have continues to be the clinical staff. Nurses, technicians, unit coordinators and others in those type of roles. And the Army has those jobs. The Army employs nurses, and so if I can get a nurse that says, 'Hey, I want to just go work at Altru,' this is the perfect fit to fill some of those gaps. For the Army, the benefit of working with an organization like Altru, is that they offer jobs with skills that directly translate from time in the service to the workforce. And the benefits go both ways, as a pipeline of well-trained Veterans could be a big boost to staffing."

PaYS is a unique program designed to connect Soldiers to business communities for future employment through the program. Soldiers are leveraging their opportunities and are guaranteed a job interview with five PaYS partners of their choosing upon completion of service."

Ms. Gee stated, "There are two roadblocks that I've run up against in my recruiting career. The first is access to talent. Each military installation has different rules on how to access military talent directly. Number two is, and I did a lot of research throughout my 13 years of recruiting, on how to translate Servicemembers' resumes and experience into Civilian life, and that's been a challenge. Those challenges are no longer a factor with this partnership. We will be able to directly communicate with Soldiers and understand their talents."
