JULY NEWSLETTER THEMES
Independence Day
Also called the Fourth of July, Independence Day marks the historic date in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress. The written declaration stated that the American colonies were free of being ruled by Great Britain. As we approach Independence Day, we reflect on the significance of this national holiday, not only for our country but also for those who serve in our Armed Forces. Independence Day represents freedom and unity.

PAYS PARTNERS AGRIVISION EQUIPMENT GROUP AND BORDER STATES HIRE PaYS SOLDIERS AND VETERANS
By: Frank McNeil & Travis Carter
During a recent interview, PaYS Marketer Travis Carter recognized Nicholas Cook, Training Coordinator, AgriVision Equipment Group, for his remarkable journey and contributions to the company. In the interview, Mr. Cook discussed how he utilized the PaYS program as a valuable resource to secure employment with AgriVision, highlighting the program's effectiveness in connecting Veterans with meaningful career opportunities. AgriVision Equipment Group, a PaYS partner, is known for its commitment to delivering high-quality agricultural equipment and services, supporting farmers and agribusinesses throughout the region. Carter highlighted Cook's success as a testament to the strong partnership between PaYS and AgriVision Equipment Group, showcasing the mutual benefits of this collaboration. Here is his reflection:
Why did you join the Army? What was/is your MOS?
My grandfather was an Air Force Retiree, and I grew up hearing stories of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I was a 31B Military Police for the first half of my career, then went into recruiting.
Why did you want AgriVision Equipment Group to partner with the PaYS Program?
In my time in USAREC, I used the PaYS program with every enlistment. It was a great additional incentive that most new enlistees didn't fully grasp how much it could help them in their future. My company is very pro-military, and I knew that it would provide for a good transition from the military.
Share your experience in connecting with PaYS and having your organization become a partner.
I reached out to both PaYS on Facebook, as well as with leadership at the Omaha Recruiting Company. 1SG Leon Ard, who is now attending the Sergeants Majors Academy, was part of the process every step of the way. It has helped provide an additional funnel of potential employees. We have also used the program as a way in to recruit at the Fort Riley Transition Assistance Program (TAP).
If Agrivision Equipment Group was your first position after service, how was the transition from the Army to Agrivision?
I was a contractor with Veterans Affairs for the first year and a half after I retired from the Army in November 2020. I left that position because I wanted to take the summer off to spend time with my family. I will say from day one of my employment with AgriVision Equipment Group in September of 2022, it has truly been a positive experience. We have a large Veteran population within the company. The company does provide for a smooth transition.
How did your military experience help with your current position at Agrivision?
Being I had zero experience in the agricultural industry prior to starting my career here, my military background was key. I am the Training Coordinator for the company, which has around 1,100 employees. My last assignment in the Army was in 3rd Recruiting Brigade Headquarters in Fort Knox, KY. I worked in both the training and operations sections, which supports over 2,000 Soldiers over 11 states. My job now is a lot similar, but on a smaller scale.
What advice do you have for Soldiers reaching out to PaYS partners?
My biggest piece of advice is if something looks interesting to you, and you have never really done the job previously, still go for it. If you have the work ethic and desire to learn, companies will take a chance on you. You will also be rewarded for your work. Don't let the transition from military to Civilian life scare you.
Veteran, Brian McDonald, excels in career with Border States
PaYS Marketer, Travis Carter recently connected with Brian McDonald, a Veteran who successfully transitioned from the Army into the Civilian workforce. Brian, now employed by Border States, PaYS Partner, shared his support of the PaYS program as a career resource. Border States, an esteemed PaYS Partner, is a construction, industrial and utility market supply company.
Why did you join the Army?
I, like many 16-year-olds, had no idea what I wanted to do after high school. I was at the local racetrack one Saturday night in May 2004, and a recruiter spoke to me about the Army. In 2004, the United States was in both Afghanistan and Iraq. I knew multiple people who were deployed, but what that meant didn't register until later. I turned 17 in June, and my birthday gift was doing the duck walk at MEPS to enlist. I think part of it may have been family tradition with relatives who had served in every branch and in every major conflict, including:
· WWI: My great-grandfather was hit with mustard gas.
· WWII: My great-uncle was a pilot.
· Korea: My great-uncle was in 1st Cavalry.
· Vietnam: My grandfather was in 1st Infantry Division.
· Libya: My grandfather served.
· Grenada: My uncle and father were active duty at the time but weren't boots on the ground.
· Gulf War: My uncle was a Marine with boots on the ground. Another uncle was a submariner supporting. My dad was enlisted but not deployed.
· Afghanistan: My uncle was deployed when I enlisted.
· Iraq: My cousin was deployed when I enlisted.
What is your opinion of the PaYS Program?
I think the PaYS Program is a fantastic way for soldiers to see what opportunities are available to them when they are looking to Expiration Term of Service. I wish I had paid more attention as I was going through my Transition Assistance Program - I did a lot of things the hard way and [I wish I] would have found out about this program back then.
Share your experience in connecting with Border States.
Working with Border States has been fantastic. The onboarding process was seamless, the benefits are top-notch, and, as an employee-owner, the company's success is my success. Border States has multiple career paths for employees. One highlight of the company is, Border States encourages all employee-owners to give back to their communities and gives us 16 hours of paid volunteer hours annually. I use my volunteer hours to work with disabled Veterans.
How did your military experience help with your current position at Border States?
The military taught all of us skills early on, which takes many people years to acquire. Working as a platoon instead of squad is cross-functional teamwork and communication. Planning missions gives us problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. When the mission doesn't go as planned, you learn to be flexible and resilient. Knowing what must be done and accomplishing those tasks shows us how to be self-motivators. Being a squad leader or team leader gives you leadership experience and experience with delegating work that translates well in my role at Border States.
What advice do you have for Soldiers reaching out to PaYS partners for potential employment?
Listen and explore the opportunities available to you. Many employers want the skills you bring with your service as those valuable skills are hard to train. Many of these employers will give you opportunities to become successful and compensate you accordingly.
