PaYS Observes National Hispanic Heritage Month with SGM Alberto Roche, New York City Battalion

SGM Alberto Roche
By: Crancena Ross

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the PaYS program proudly highlights the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic Americans. Crancena Ross, PaYS Marketing Analyst, interviewed SGM Alberto Roche, Operations, New York City Battalion, to discuss his heritage and the valuable impact of Hispanic Americans in the workplace.

Please share a little about your background and Hispanic Heritage (where were you born, family traditions, etc.)?

Born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico, with a big family-oriented culture. I like to spend most of my time with my children Alberto Jr., Francisco, and wife Elsie. We are big into BBQ family gatherings, travel, and dancing.
SGM Alberto Roche and his Mother, Father, Sister, and Brother at his Change of Responsibility Ceremony
In your observation, in what ways does the PaYS program with the US Army benefit Soldiers?

The PaYS program guarantees Soldiers up to five job interviews and possible employment after their service in the Army. The PaYS program is designed to help Soldiers prepare for a career after the Army by connecting them with employers who understand the skills, discipline, and work ethic that military service members bring to a business.

What influence, has the Hispanic culture played a role in your position as the Operations SGM in the Army?

My role as the SGM of Operations at the New York City Recruiting Battalion has been a rewarding journey. Hispanic culture influences my leadership role in the Army by emphasizing the value of family, respect, and hard work. These influences translate into strong leadership qualities like, treating others with respect, fostering a sense of community and trust, and encouraging Soldiers to be adaptable in challenging situations.

What advice would you give to the younger you and others seeking a leadership position?

Be the best version of yourself and utilize resources, such as the PaYS program to enhance professional and personal growth. Take advantage of the careers in the Army as it is a great organization that trains leaders in many fields transferrable to Civilian careers.

Be all you can be!

National Suicide Prevention Month

National Suicide Prevention graphic

During National Suicide Prevention Month, observed in September, understanding the issues concerning suicide and mental health is an important way to take part in suicide prevention, help others in crisis, and change the conversation around suicide. Risk factors are characteristics that make it more likely that someone will consider, attempt, or die by suicide. They can't cause or predict a suicide attempt, but they are important to be aware of. National Suicide Prevention Month

National Suicide Prevention Month graphic
By: LaQuyin Brock

Suicide is tragic and the leading cause of death, with over 700,000 lives lost to annually, according to the World Health Organization. Understanding the factors contributing to suicide and implementing effective prevention strategies are crucial steps toward saving lives and supporting those in need. National Suicide Prevention Month is honored to remember the lives lost to suicide and educate others to intervene. This year's theme is "Connect to Protect". This theme underscores the importance of connecting with people we trust, because individuals who have strong supportive relationships, have a lower suicidal risk. PaYS challenges everyone to use the I AM campaign to prevent suicide. Intervene, Act, and Motivate to prevent suicide. One is too many! LaQuyin Brock, Drill Sergeant, 2009

Retired Command Sergeant Major, LaQuyin Brock, PaYS Senior Marketing Analyst shared, "During my tenure as a Drill Sergeant, there was an initial entry Soldier that committed suicide. He was a rehabilitative transfer, who did not perform well, and as a result, was facing discharge from the Army. There were no visible signs of the possibility, but knowing then what I know now, I would have sought counseling for the Soldier because sometimes people carry childhood trauma into adulthood and can't adjust, which leads to suicide."

If you or someone you know is in crisis, remember that help is available. Reach out to mental health professionals, crisis services, and supportive communities. Together, we can foster a world where everyone feels valued, supported, and hopeful. There are over 100 health organizations registered as PaYS partners to help those in need.

Patriot Day graphic Patriot Day

Patriot Day, is a holiday observed in the United States on September 11 to commemorate the lives of those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Virginia and those who perished when the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. The holiday also recognizes those who died attempting to rescue people trapped by the attacks.

By a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress on Dec. 18, 2001, September 11 was designated as Patriot Day. The resolution calls for the president of the United States to issue a yearly proclamation requesting that all U.S. flags be flown at half-staff. Further, Americans are asked to honor the fallen with a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 am, Eastern Standard Time, the time that the first airplane struck the World Trade Center, and to respect the ceremonies of remembrance when they are conducted.

Suffolk County Police Department and MSG Thomas Joy Remember Patriot Day

911 graphic
By: Thomas Parker

It was a terrifying day when four planes were hijacked on September 11, 2001 (also known as 9-11). The hijackers flew three planes into iconic buildings: the Pentagon, Arlington, VA and Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after the plane passengers fought the hijackers. Nobody is certain where it was supposed to crash, but some people believe it was headed for the White House, the U.S. Capitol, the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, or one of several nuclear power plants along the eastern seaboard.

PaYS Project Lead, Thomas Parker recently spoke to Officer Thomas Joy, Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD), New York about Patriot Day and what it means to him.

Photo far right - MSG Thomas Joy in his Army Service Uniform displaying his many decorations and awards.

Tell us a little bit about your background and why you joined the Army.

My name is Thomas Joy and I'm a Citizen Soldier currently serving in the United States Army Reserve as a Master Sergeant. I'm an immigrant from India and I came to the United States when I was 17 years old. I enlisted in the Army 27 years ago with less than a year of being here. I served for 12 years on active duty. I was deployed for combat service to Iraq from 2005-2006 and earned a Combat Action Badge. My first few years of service was during peace time but then the events of 9/11 changed my whole trajectory of service and perspective on life. Even though initially my service brought me things of personal gain like my citizenship, the GI Bill, VA Home Loan, Veterans credits on Civil Service exams, and learning new life skills, the events of 9/11 instilled a renewed sense of service, patriotism and community in my adopted nation. This sense of service and community were among my reasons that allowed for a transition from military service to service as a law enforcement officer.

How does Suffolk County Police Department recognize Patriot Day? Is the city collaborating with an Army installation on any events?

Suffolk County on Long Island, NY boasts the highest concentration of Veterans of any county in NY State and the second in the nation. More than 1/3rd of SCPD is made up of Veterans. The department has two police fraternal organizations, 9-1-1 Veterans of Long Island and Suffolk Police Veterans Association, that advocates for our police officers who are Veterans, assists in recruitment from the Veteran and (center) Suffolk County Executive, Ed Romaine, (second from right) President, Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association, Lou Civello and officers of the Suffolk County PDmilitary community, and serves as a liaison between our department, and our Veterans. Suffolk County is among the few places in the nation that has a dedicated "Veterans Court" in the Traffic and Criminal Court system that caters exclusively to Veterans. Suffolk County is home to the Northport Veterans Hospital system and several Reserve bases for almost all branches of service. SCPD sent many officers from our department to serve at the World Trade Center at Ground Zero during 9/11. Unfortunately, several of them have since succumbed to 9/11 related illnesses. SCPD strong record of service to our nation, our sense of patriotism and our intricate relationship to the events of 9/11, almost every municipality and government organization in the county will be hosting a 9/11 memorial service. Among the largest of the events planned for 9/11 is the one hosted by Suffolk County Executive, Ed Romaine at the Suffolk County Seat,100 Veterans Memorial Highway, Hauppaugue. The event will be held at a specially built memorial that encompasses the names of the Suffolk County residents who were lost on that tragic day.

Do you remember where you were on 9/11/2001? If so, tell us about that experience and how it impacted you?

On 9/11 of 2001, I was on leave in NY from my active-duty station in Germany. I remember the day vividly. The pain, the agony and suffering, the urge to help, the need to protect our nation, and being immediately ready, and prepared for war as a young Soldier were all feelings that I remember so clearly. As I stated earlier, my life was forever altered from that infamous day.

By: Samuel I. Armstrong

ABC Supply logoJoshua Kammeraad recently completed 23 years with the Wisconsin Army National Guard (WIARNG). Originally from Janesville, WI, Joshua has served in various capacities over the last 16 years, including roles as a Recruiter, Platoon Sergeant, Military Science Instructor, and Marketing Director with the Army National Guard. During his time with the WIARNG Recruiting and Retention Battalion, Joshua was introduced to the PaYS program.
Joshua Kammeraad, Army National Guard Soldier and current ABC Supply employee
While pursuing employment with ABC Supply, Joshua discovered that the company was a PaYS partner. He learned about this connection through their website, which featured images from their PaYS signing ceremony. Now, Joshua serves as the Veteran Recruiting Administrator for ABC Supply. In this role, he connects more Veterans to ABC Supply and helps them translate their military skills to the civilian workplace.

Joshua stated that his transition from the WIARNG to ABC Supply was seamless. "I felt welcomed from day one and was made to feel like an immediate part of the team," he shared. "The onboarding process went very smoothly, and I was provided with all the information and tools needed to do my job, which helped me hit the ground running. The culture at ABC has been just as advertised. One of my priorities in selecting a position post-military was finding an organization with a culture that was a good fit for me, and I feel that I found exactly what I was looking for."

When asked what advice he would give to ARNG Soldiers about signing up for PaYS, Joshua emphasized the importance of research. "Do your research on the companies you select," he advised. "Find the right organization-one that has a culture that matches what you are looking for. I would highly recommend ARNG Soldiers ensure their resume is complete and lists certifications and skills needed for the job they are applying for."

Cadet Kimberlyn Raab interns with PaYS Partner, Amsted Rail

By: Samuel I. Armstrong

Kimberlyn RaabKimberlyn RaabWestern Illinois University junior and Army ROTC Cadet Kimberlyn Raab, hailing from Warren, IL, has a story of dedication and growth that highlights the valuable intersection between military service and civilian career opportunities. With a background that spans rigorous military training and hands-on industrial experience, Cadet Raab's journey offers insight into how the skills and lessons learned in one domain can be effectively applied to another. Cadet Raab's commitment to serving her country began in November 2019 when she joined the Illinois Army National Guard (ILARNG). She completed her basic training in December 2020, earning her place as a Military Police Officer. Her service took a significant step forward when she was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, from January to November 2023 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. This deployment was a critical period of her service, where she honed her skills in high-pressure environments.

Cadet Raab recently completed an internship with PaYS partner Amsted Rail, a pivotal experience that broadened her professional horizons. She learned about the Army PaYS (Partnership for Youth Success) program, while interning. The internship provided her with hands-on experience with heavy machinery and dangerous equipment, areas that are far removed from the controlled environments of military training but equally crucial for developing a keen sense of awareness and safety. Amsted Rail

Her exposure to industrial environments at Amsted Rail contrasted with her usual military experiences, such as firearms training and managing large military vehicles. This experience improved her situational awareness and adaptability-skills that are invaluable both in military and civilian settings.
Kimberlyn Raab
One of the most significant takeaways from her internship was the value of communication. Raab learned the importance of networking and building personal relationships with supervisors at different levels within the plant. This skill is crucial in any professional setting and aligns well with her military role, where effective communication can make a difference in high-stress situations like riot control or traffic management.

Cadet Raab's experience at Amsted Rail has also reshaped her perception of civilian jobs. It has shown her that the transition from military to civilian employment is not as daunting as it may seem. The exposure to different career opportunities has reinforced her confidence in finding roles outside the military, highlighting that the skills gained in service are transferable and valuable in various industries.

Cadet Raab advice to National Guard soldiers is to explore opportunities with companies partnered with the Army PaYS program. PaYS partners can alleviate the stress of job hunting and provide a platform to demonstrate how military experience can be an asset to potential employers.
