THE CITY OF SAN ANTONIO, TX HOSTED THEIR ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. PARADE

By Samuel I. Armstrong

City of San Antonio logo The City of San Antonio, a PaYS partner, hosted its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. parade, a time-honored event, that honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The parade has a rich history that dates back to 1968, when it was founded by Rev. Dr. Raymond Callies. Dr. Callies, a passionate advocate for the infrastructural needs of the city's Eastside community, initiated the march as a way to promote Dr. King's message of equality and social justice.

Recognized as one of the largest marches in the United States, San Antonio's Martin Luther King, Jr. parade draws an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 people each year. The nearly 3-mile procession along Martin Luther King Drive concludes at Pittman-Sullivan Park, where the community gathers for a celebration featuring live music, a variety of vendors, and information booths that highlight local organizations and initiatives.

City of San Antonio Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration A unique tradition of the parade is the inclusion of a garbage truck leading the procession. This gesture symbolizes Dr. King's advocacy for sanitation workers, reminding marchers of his work in Memphis, where he was fighting for the rights of sanitation workers when he was tragically assassinated in 1968. The garbage truck serves as a powerful symbol of Dr. King's commitment to labor rights and social justice. It's a day for the community to come together, reflect on the progress of the civil rights movement, and continue Dr. King's work for a better and more inclusive society.

ARMY PaYS CELEBRATES ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY: A LEGACY OF PARTNERSHIP AND OPPORTUNITY

By: PaYS Staff

PaYS 25th anniversary logo The U.S. Army Partnership for Your Success (Army PaYS) program is marking a significant milestone in 2025: its 25th anniversary. Since its inception, Army PaYS has provided an innovative pathway for young men and women to bridge their military service with civilian careers. The program continues to be a key component of the Army's recruitment strategy, as well as a model of collaboration between the military and private industry.

A Vision for the Future: Connecting Soldiers to Jobs

Launched in 2000, the Army PaYS program was designed to help Soldiers transition from military service to the civilian workforce by forging partnerships between the Army and leading companies in various industries. The goal was clear: to create a network of employers who would guarantee job interviews or employment opportunities to Soldiers who completed their service, thereby easing the often-challenging transition from military life to civilian employment.

This vision is now a reality, as Army PaYS has built relationships with over 1,300 companies across a wide spectrum of sectors, including technology, healthcare, manufacturing, finance, and logistics. These partnerships have enabled thousands of Veterans to secure meaningful employment upon leaving the Army.

A Program with Lasting Impact

As Army PaYS celebrates its 25th anniversary, the program's impact is clear. Thousands of veterans have successfully leveraged their military training and experiences to build long-term careers in the civilian workforce. The continued success of Army PaYS is a testament to the enduring importance of partnerships between the military and the private sector in ensuring a prosperous future for those who serve.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future

In the coming years, the Army PaYS program will likely continue to evolve, incorporating new industries, expanding its reach to more Soldiers, and exploring innovative ways to enhance the employment prospects for military service members. However, the core mission will remain the same: to provide young men and women the support they need to build meaningful careers and ensure the Nation's defense is matched by a vibrant and skilled workforce.

GOOD NEWS! - PaYS PARTNER, CITY OF AUGUSTA, ME POLICE SUPPORTS VETERANS

By: Victor Fleming

City of Augusta logo As we recognize the support of PaYS partners, we highlight the City of Augusta, ME, for their continued commitment to providing employment opportunities to Veterans and transitioning Soldiers. PaYS Marketing Analyst, Victor Fleming, had a chance to connect with Officer Everett Blair, a CPL in the Maine Army National Guard and City of Augusta Police Officer.
Everett Blair
Mr. Blair, a 2021 high school graduate, had clear aspirations to be a police officer. However, he faced a challenge many young people encountered, he wasn't old enough to join the police force. Instead of waiting, Blair took a different approach by enlisting in the Maine Army National Guard. In 2021, right out of high school, Blair enlisted as a 12W, carpentry and masonry specialist. Everett Blair

Growing up with a shared sense of duty, he exemplified a strong commitment to public service from an early age. While Blair always dreamed of becoming a police officer, he knew that joining the Army National Guard would offer him the discipline, training, and leadership experience that would help him when he eventually took on a career in law enforcement. Fast forward to January 2024, Officer Blair now proudly serves as a member of the Augusta Police Department. He officially joined the force after completing police academy training. This transition wasn't as difficult for Officer Blair as it might have been for others. He credits much of his success to the skills and structure he developed while serving in the National Guard.

"The discipline and leadership skills I learned in the National Guard made adjusting to the police academy a lot easier," Officer Blair stated in an interview. "I was already used to military structure, following orders, and working as a team. That background helped me to focus and excel in the academy." Throughout his life, Blair has always had a strong desire to be a public figure and contribute to his community. Growing up in Maine, he witnessed firsthand the positive impact that local police officers could have. This inspired him to pursue his dream of becoming a law enforcement officer.

With both teams fiercely competing, the game celebrated tradition and an opportunity to honor military service.

The event featured intense competition, but the ceremonial moments truly stood out. The Golden Knights, the Army's elite parachute team, performed a stunning jump, descending from the sky as the National Anthem played. Shortly before the game began, the crowd was treated to a flyover by military jets, which soared above the stadium in perfect formation. The roar of the engines and the synchronized display were a visual tribute to the service and sacrifice of the men and women in uniform, leaving the crowd in awe and reinforcing the game's deep military connection.

The PaYS and Soldier For Life programs continue to support Veterans' career transitions, emphasizing the Army's commitment to its Soldiers' future success.
